I have called these starter whips because they are aimed at those that have no experience at all with a whip. They are ideal to learn with as an 8 Plait whip is much more robust and able to stand punishment than say a 16 or 24 plait whip. Believe me if you have never used a whip before along the road of learning there will be plenty of times you'll smash it into the ground or wrap it round tree branches, whilst i'm not saying they are indestructable they will stand alot more than a whip plaited with a higher number of strings. That said I construct these the same way and with the same care as I plait all my other whips so you will still get a whip that rolls out straight and performs well.

Construction

I know a lot of Whipmakers just use a shot bag covered with a bolster and then plait over the top of it, I had planned to do the same but couldnt bring myself to do it, so these little 8 Plait Starter Whips are constructed in the same way as a pocket snake with a six plait belly. There are two well known sayings in the whip making world, one is "shape it right and plait it tight" and the second one is "a whip is like a man, no guts no good" I cant seem to get away from that so these little whips are constructed incorporating both of those sayings, and my conscience is clear.

Construction

These start out with a core attached to a 6mm high tensile steel pin to add weight and balance to the handle end, this is then bolstered, plaited in a four plait, then plaited again in a six plait and ovelaid in an eight plait, binding is added between each layer.
